Sinclair Gordon Harvey

Sinclair was born on 22 August 1921. He grew up on Happy Valley and was taught by his uncle
Douglas
the arts of hunting and poaching. He attended Marist Bothers College and Brebner High school. At the outbreak of World War 2 he signed up at the age of 19 years. One week after marrying
Gertrude Julia Smith
on the 30th November, 1940, he went off to war in the Sahara desert. He was captured at Tobruk and taken as a POW to Italy to work on a farm. Together with several prisoners he he managed to escape and spent a year in hiding with the Italian resistance. Eventually he and a comrade , Mostert, managed to climb over the Alps and escape into neutral Switzerland where he spent two years before being able to return home via a liberated France. Gertrude Julia Smith was born on 29 August 1920 to a cockney father(Smith) and an Afrikaans mother(Venter). They had 3 children, namely

Blenn
and
Stanley
. Shortly after Blenn's birth Gertrude contracted rheumatic fever which caused severe damage to her heart valve . Her health deteriorated increasingly and she eventually died on 24 July 1961.The farm Hillside was sold and Sinclair rejoined the Army Permanent force and was sent to Walvis Bay . Patricia married James Donald in Walvis Bay. Sinclair remarried Doreen Walsh and was eventually transferred to Bloemfontein. He eventually died there on 1 March 1977 of a brain tumour.
