Gertrude Julia Harvey (Smith)

Gertrude Julia Harvey (born Smith) was born to Clifford and Hester (Venter) on 29 August 1920. Clifford was a cockney Londoner who fought in both world wars and a Delville Wood survivor. Gertie was the eldest of four siblings, the others being Clifford, Anne, Ethel and Peter. Clifford married Dawn Hiten and had 3 daughtres, namely Rolene Pearl, Serena Dawn and Gaynor. Anne married Joseph Redmead and had two children, namely Joanne and James. Ethel married Jack Blair and had three children namely John Hay, Phyllis and Linda. Peter married Maureen Probert and had two children, namely Peter Desmond and Mervyn. One week before Sinclair went off to war, he and Gertie were married. On his return, four years later,they bought Hillside and started farming. Their children were born over the next 7 years and they were Patricia Estelle, Blenn and Stanley. Shortly after Blenn's birth in 1949 Gertie contracted Rheumatic fever which caused severe heart-valve damage at a time when no treatment was yet available. She lived for another 10 years with ever-deteriorating health and eventually succumbed to heart failure on 24 July 1961. About a week before she died she compiled the SCRAPBOOK of photos and memorabilia which is published on this site.
